Bulbs are self-contained little packages of power that will reward the grower with years of carefree color and satisfaction.  They are a must for any home garden.  They are planted when dormant, and then grow, bloom, and store food before they go dormant once again.  

Most of us think of the spring flowering bulbs such as Daffodils and Tulips when we are planning our gardens, but there are fabulous summer and even winter flowering varieties that will make the garden shine with their easy care and natural beauty.  Most bulbs have graceful foliage that enhances the garden even before the flowers themselves bloom. 

Spring flowering bulbs should be planted when the ground temperature reaches around 60 degrees.  These bulbs need the cold winter (chilling off period) in order to produce spring flowers.  If they can't be planted immediately, they can be stored in the refrigerator in mesh bags until it is time for planting.  Once in the garden, most should be dug and divided every few years for optimal bloom. Summer flowering bulbs can be planted once the ground has warmed in the spring and usually bloom the same year.

For the purposes of this page, all the bulb listings attached will be referred to as bulbs, although some of them are not true bulbs.  There are also corms, rhizomes, and tubers, which also have unique food-storing capabilities and grow in similar ways.  If you haven't tried growing bulbs yet, now is the time to consider it.  They are fabulous, care-free plants most of which bloom reliably year after year, and as such are an essential part of any home gardening plan.

As a note, in some cases, individual bulbs may be better known as annuals, biennials, perennials, and herbs, especially in the south.  In cases where this is well-known, I have listed them in multiple categories so they won't be overlooked.  This is a large website, and it is very difficult to cross-reference everything and still have room for the subject matter.  I have done my best, but don't forget about the backspace buttons if you find yourself in an unintended category.
